The insert consists of a welded structure using two suspension rails each contg. a row of slots in which straps are located and welded. The rails consist of angle iron, which pref. has a U-shaped cross-section; and the distance of the rails from the front plate of the extruder can pref. be varied by distance pieces. Each strap pref. carries a row of rods attached to strap by welding; and each rod carries a core located by a nut. Cores may be of different sizes; and the use of many thin straps means that a large number of holes can be cored in an extruded brick. The cores possess a rigid structure, and offer little resistance to the flow of the ceramic so they are not displaced sideways in the extruder mouthpiece.
