In this electric regenerative furnace, a storage core, consisting of a number of layers of shaped bricks (63), is surrounded by a housing with a front wall (3), a rear wall (5), in each case one end wall, a cover (9) and a bottom plate (27). On its front and rear side, the storage core is provided with insulating walls (10v, 10h) made of aluminium-coated sheet steel and is in contact with these only via part surfaces running with a lateral spacing from one another. The insulating walls (10v, 10h) as well as the upper side of the core are coated with an insulation (17, 19 and 21). Arranged between the rear wall (5) and the insulation (19) is a buckled plate (85) which between projections (87) ensures a thin, stationary and thus insulating air layer. In the storage core, the upward flow parts (29) and the downward flow parts (31) of the air guide ducts are arranged on the rear side and on the front side respectively. They are interconnected continuously per shaped-brick layer by deflection parts (33). The deflection parts (33) are formed by recesses (35), each of which receives a heating element. This construction makes it possible to produce a regenerative furnace with low construction depth. <IMAGE>
