A ball (5) which can be rotated by the wall (2) of a rotated measuring tube (1) and which can be entrained at the instant of fibrin strand formation by the wall (2) of the measuring tube is held in the base region (3) of the measuring tube. In the region of the base (3) of the measuring tube, the ball runway (raceway) (6) has a limiting stud (4) which projects centrally from the base (3). The limiting stud (4) and the wall (2) of the measuring tube are fluted (channelled) by means of small ridges (7, 8) parallel to the longitudinal axis of the measuring tube (1). As a result of the trough-like design of the ball runway (6), the ball (5) is at a short distance from the limiting stud (4) and from the wall (2) of the measuring tube. Situated on the path described by the ball (5) in the entrainment phase is a sensor which responds to the ball (5) and triggers a control pulse. This apparatus has a simple structural design, and safely and reliably ensures an automatic detection of the start of clotting. <IMAGE>
