In a winding head for yarn packages, wherein the package tube is held between centreing plates in a horizontal yoke, at least one of the plates is constructed as a braking drum capable of arresting fast-rotating, large-capacity cheeses. An internal surface of the drum, pref. of conical form, is lined with a braking material. An axially-movable braking shoe of complementary conical form is pneumatically pressed into contact with the drum when the yoke is raised from the winding position. The device operates automatically, without manual assistance, and permits the operator to be occupied elsewhere during the possibly extended braking period.
