The furnace consists of a U-shaped trough resting on rollers which are driven by a motor to tilt the trough in alternate directions, one for charging, and the other for cleaning the furnace. The trough is closed by a lid fitted with wheels mounted on rails; and each side of the lid has a flange pointing downwards and ending in a recess forming a pivot bearing for a shaft fixed to the trough. The underside of the lid is pref. fitted with a skirt entering a recess on the top edge of the trough to form a seal; and the trough pref. rests on friction rollers employed for tilting. The sealable lid increases the thermal efficiency of the furnace so fuel consumption is reduced.
