New colloid solution suitable for use as a blood substitute is obtainable by reaction of a physiologically tolerable, water soluble colloid with an aliphatic perfluoro cpd. and adjustment to an isotonic electrolyte content. Used as a substitute for blood or plasma for transfusions when high blood losses have to be replaced. Thon osmotic and cotic pressure and flow properties of the colloid solution are closely similar to those of blood. The solution caters for transport and exchange of, but does not react with, oxygen and CO2. It has no adverse effects on the constituents of natural blood, and facilitates the regeneration of blood components. The components of the solution are eventually excreted from the body.
