Error measurement in navigation distance or speed sensor - involving computations using measured values of known position coordinates

A method of determining errors in sensors measuring the distance covered or speed of a vehicle with a navigation unit using the sensor output to determine the position of the vehicle enables simple reliable error measurement and/or an at least approximate correction of the errors. The position (P2) determined in a first computation process combining the sensor signal and the output of a direction sensor differs from the actual position (P1). A further computation carried out with a given speed or acceleration dependent pseudo-error results in a corresp. erroneous position (P3). These computations are performed for two or more routes between known positions. The sensor errors are determined using the known coordinates of the route end positions. The measured errors are then used for error correction.
