Positioning system for tool carriage w.r.t. moving workpiece - allows cutting etc. or continuously moving workpieces, using sensor and evaluator controlling start and return springs

The positioning system holds the carriage (1) in its rest position against the action of a start spring (5). When released, the start spring accelerates the carriage in the direction in which the workpiece is moving linearly through the machine. A sensor measures the movements of the carriage and the workpiece (14). Signals describing these movements are compared and the result used to position the carriage using an electronic evaluator when the carriage and workpiece are moving at the same speed. The start spring can be set so as to impart different accelerations to the carriage. A return spring (19) forces the carriage to its start position along with the workpiece.
