Prepn. of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperid-4-one (I) comprises heating acetone and NH3 with a salt (II) of an N-contg. base, opt. in the presence of aco-catalyst (III) and organic solvent (IV). Higher conversions, selectivities and yields are obtd. than in conventional processes using e.g. Lewis acid or mineral acid catalysts. (1) is useful as an intermediate e.g. for the prodn. of piperidine stabilisers.
