When it is opened a trip piece (2) actuates a lever (3) in such a manner that the spring-loaded cradle (4) is held depressed even though the telephone receiver is lifted off, and remains so as long as the lid remains open. As a consequence, the user may dictate a message or replay it in the knowledge that no external call is impeded. If such an incoming call occurs, the user need only close the lid again and then respond to the call in the usual way.
