To increase the suction action of the suction head and prevent tangling of the carpet fibres the rotatable drum (4) has several transverse partitions (7). It is mounted on a fixed tubular axis (9) which is pierced with several apertures. The drum (4) rotates during the to and fro motion of the suction head so that the incoming air flows into the chambers at the bottom and out through the apertures of the chambers near the air outlet opening. The remaining chambers have no air intake so that the fibres previously drawn in slide out of the area of the chambers without any clamping between the partition and the hood (6).
