Sludge is dewatered on the upper run of a moving foraminous filter belt through which the water drains, and at the discharge end thereof is arranged a ramp (25) which, positioned between fixed side plates (27) causes a restriction in forward movement and build-up of sludge particles on the surface of the ramp thus to create a pressure by virtue of the increased sludge head, and, by virtue of a backwards rolling action and compaction of the particles, provide increased drainage of water from the sludge.
