Three-dimensional moulded pressings, partic. for the furnishing of motor vehicle interiors, are produced from a pre-bonded fibrous web of cellulosic or ligno-cellulosic fibres sandwiched between two carrier sheets of limited extensibility such as paper, metal or plastic film, fabric, etc., which have an array of short slits oriented perpendicularly to the direction of deformation, whereby the deformation of the web is uniformly distributed, and after the forming operation the web remains as a continuous sheet which is bonded to the carrier sheets. The carrier sheets may be attached to the web by a coating of adhesive on the inner faces, or they may be stitched or bonded together through the web with soluble stitches or bonds. This structure permits the formation of thin-walled pressings in a single operation without rupturing the fibre web. The fibrous content may be of short, waste fibre from other fibre-processing machinery, and the carrier sheets may comprise a wide range of materials, with greater thickness and strength than was possible with earlier processes.
|
