The method produces workpieces with fine needle-type bosses, the boss being ground to its finished dia. by a progressive grinding operation in a single pass. The work is thrust axially towards the grinder disc (7) through a stationary bearing (20) during this operation, the rotary and feed movement being imparted to it without side loading. To form a taper on the boss, the bearing can be slid at right angles to the axis of the work as this is fed forward. The grinder disc can run in a stationary bearing in a frame (11), while the work bearing is fixed to the machine bed. A feed slide travels on the bed in the axial direction of the work, being equipped with a drive mechanism for work feed and rotation free of side loading.
