The reciprocating chain drive for a bicycle has a chain (2) passing over the sprocket wheel (8) and driven by a crank lever (23). A rubber or spring tensioner (28) is fitted to the end of the chain and is taken over a roller (32) and along to a remote securing point (25) under the crossbar. This enables a long length of rubber to be used with less reaction drag. The roller is fitted to the side of the rear luggage carrier (18). The longer rubber ensures that for the fixed amount of extension it requires less effort than with a shorter rubber. The under frame mounting on the crossbar does not interfere with the operation of the machine.
