The drive has a combustion engine and a transmission, as well as an alternator set (6) on the boat electric system. The alternator set comprises several, similarly driven, high-speed alternators (15a-d). The conventional transmission (4) is of hydrostatic type. The engine (1) drives an infinitely variable reversible oil pump (3), while an oil circuit (7) feeds a hydraulic motor (8) for the propeller (5) drive. The circuit also feeds a second hydraulic motor (3) via branch or by-pass lines (12). Preferably the alternators are designed for speeds of up to 14,000 r.p.m. All the alternator rotors may be mounted on a common drive shaft, itself driven by the second hydraulic motor. Alternately, each alternator rotor is driven by a separate hydraulic motor in parallel. In such instance the hydraulic motor may be of gear type.
