Aircraft identification by image characteristic dimension comparison - using image acquisition unit with stored data, connected to TV pictures display device

An arrangement for identification of flying objects enables automatic, rapid and reliable identification of aircraft including those in which no active elements are carried for identification purposes. Characteristic dimensional parameters are extracted from one or more images obtained by an image acquisition unit. The derived dimensional parameters are compared with those held in a memory and corresp. to known targets. An evaluation unit allocates a similarity signal for each comparison. A display shows a signal for the object corresp. to the comparison for which max. similarity occurs. The image acquisition unit may consist of an infrared image sensor, radar image unit, or a residual or ordinary video unit. The arrangement operates reliably for aircraft from any aspect angle.
