The machine tool has an L- or C-shaped frame (1) on a pedestal (2) carrying a work support table (13). The latter is movable on respective guides (14,11) in an X-direction at right angles to the plane of the L- or C-frame, and in a Y-direction in its plane direction. The rotatable tool spindle (6) is arranged above the table and a receptacle (16) for swarf and coolant is mounted below the guideways. The guide (11), together with its shielding covers (12), projects over and beyond the pedestal and its width in the X-direction is greater than that of the pedestal. As seen in plan view, the receptacle extends beyond the guideways in all directions.
