Rolling mill with work rolls driven by cardan shafts - rotated slowly by hydraulic cylinder to facilitate their insertion in couplings on work rolls

The rolling mill has two strands which carry two replaceable work rolls. The roll driving system consists of a motor using a coupling to drive a pinion stand with two output drive shafts (I). Each shaft (I) is connected by a coupling to a cardan shaft employed to rotate one work roll. An auxiliary drive unit is used to rotate the cardan shafts slowly, so they can easily be inserted in couplings on the work rolls. The auxiliary drive unit consists of a work cylinder employed to swivel a set of levers. One lever is used to move a flange fixed on a shaft (I) by one or more radial pegs mounted on the flange. The slow movement of the flange results in the slow rotation of both cardan shafts. Easy centering and insertion of the two cardan shafts in the couplings on the work rolls is achieved.
