The engine has cylinders arranged in line with a suction manifold supplied from a carburetter (4) with a throttle (3). A damper housing (2) with a sliding blade (1) is placed between the carburetter and the manifold. The operating rod (6) of the blade is connected to a centrifugal governor (5). The engine inlet is thus regulated according to speed and this maintains the volumetric efficiency and thus the compression ratio. The efficiency is thereby maintained over the entire range of engine speed and the engine can be designed with a higher compression ratio. A manual control (10) on the governor adjusts it for stopping and starting. Specification printed 25.3.82.
