Expansion space for explosions esp. in cooling water intake - of nuclear power plant, comprises large plastics foam blocks with low water absorption

Expansion chamber, esp. for the cooling water intake of a power plant, is composed of one or more damping cushions (6) of closed-cell plastics foam (5) possessing extremely low water absorption; this foam is precompressed to withstand the anticipated loading from the static pressure of the water surrounding it. Pref., the foam is surrounded on all sides with an elastic jacket or casing, pref. of plastics (6,9). This plastic casing is in turn clamped in a metal frame (2), composed of metal sections which grip the cushion at its edges. Used in particular to provide economical expansion in a power plant intake for a possible explosion caused by terrorists. The arrangement is economical and does not require any special structures to allow escape of gases and water.
