<p>The process uses a signal generator providing a carrier wave. This is applied to the primary winding of an impedance matching transformer which steps down the voltage. The secondary winding of the transformer is connected via a capacitor to the mains connections. The capacitor and transformer secondary winding together form a resonant circuit, resonating at a frequencyat, or near to the carrier wave signal generator. The carrier wave is modulated in order to transmit information. The signal is filtered and demodulated at another station in order to extract the information signal. The resistance of the transformer secondary winding is low - of the order of 1 ohm - while that of the primary winding is high. The power required of the generator is thus low. The operating frequency is independent of the supply characteristics.</p> |
