<p>On each side of the weld or welds on the conductors of a cable, a collar is fitted on the cable mantle to form a waterproof envelope. A sheath of non-conducting material is rolled over the collars and a mantle of synthetic material is wrapped around the sheath. The materials may be supplied as an assembled kit comprising a hard, flexible sheet of synthetic material, with a "U"-shaped strip of foam to form the collars. The edges of the sheet have slits to ease the tapering of the seal behind the collars. At the end of the synthetic sheet a rectangle of self-adhesive Al foil with a protective cover is added and this is sealed on by self-vulcanising rubber. A lattice of synthetic material, a valve and self-adhesive synthetic tape complete the outer wrapping which is filled through the value by a cold-expanding polyurethane resin. Whilst they are hermetically sealed, the welds are readily accessible since the sheath can be removed without interference with the conductors.</p> |
