An electrosurgical apparatus comprises a high-frequency power generator 10, a high-frequency transformer, a hand piece 4 for fitting an electrode 12 and a connecting cable 6 between the generator and the hand piece. In order to produce an automatic adjustment so that the power delivered by the cutter electrode 12 is at all times proportional to the cutting depth, the length of the connecting cable is adjusted according to the generator output frequency, so that the transfer function of the connecting cable gives a purely ohmic transfer of the load on the electrode side of the cable to the generator side of the cable. <IMAGE>
