Pet foods with a moisture content of 35 wt.% or less contain 0.5-50 wt.% of the stomach contents of a ruminant animal (stomach being defined as reticulum, rumen and omasum). The foods may be (a) "dry", contg. not more than 12% moisture, 5-35 (pref. 15-25) wt.% ruminant stomach contents and 5-45 (pref. 15-30) wt.% protein, or (b) "semi-dry", contg. 12-30% moisture, 5-30 (pref. 12-24) wt.% ruminant stomach contents and 5-45 (pref. 12-30) wt.% protein. Opt. ingredients include vitamins, minerals, preservatives, plasticisers and fungistatic agents. The foods can be produced by incorporating the stomach contents in a mixt. of edible materials normally used for feeding to pets, and processing the mixt. in conventional manner (e.g. in an extruder-cooker) to produce a dry or semi-dry prod., e.g. in the form of pellets, granules, chunks or strands. The prods. are esp. useful as dog foods. They are inexpensive to produce and are readily accepted by dogs. |
