Extinguishing means are included in the aforementioned foam mat which emerge in the event of a fire as a result of the foam melting at the point of the fire and smother and/or extinguish the flames. The foam mat is also suitable for sound-proofing and heat insulation. The foam mat can, depending on the nature of the engine compartment of the motor vehicle, be fastened to the inside of the bonnet of the latter or be placed directly above the engine, and fixed in place by closing the bonnet. In the case of some motor vehicles, it may be necessary to protect the foam mat against contact with the exhaust system and/or the belt drives. The foam mat mounted above the engine of a motor vehicle is intended to protect people against burning, absorb noise and furthermore accelerate warming up of the engine and/or make it possible without greatly loading the engine in the cold part of the year, thereby reducing the specific fuel consumption of the engine, the harmful concentration of exhaust gases and wear of the engine. It is advantageous for it to be possible to remove the foam mat from the engine compartment quickly and easily, so that it can be used as an extinguishing blanket or as a support in emergencies.
