An apparatus for the polymerization of plastics materials which can be polymerized under visible light, for example tooth fillings, has an electric light source 1, for example a halogen lamp, from which strong light is conveyed to a treatment site through a light conductor 6. The light source 1 is fitted in a housing 2 configured as a handpiece. In addition to an outlet opening 5 for the light, the housing 2 has a supply socket 3 and a discharge opening 4 for a cooling medium for cooling the light source, for example compressed air. The apparatus enables the light source 1 to be close to the treatment site without cause for concern. <IMAGE>
