The block has a downwardly open rectangular hollow box shape with coupling elements (at 7') projecting outwards from its upper surface and arranged at the corners of squares. Complementary coupling elements (8-10) inside clamp the upper elements of an adjoining block between themselves (8-10) and the side walls (2-5) of the block. H-section elements (8,10) alternate with square section elements (9) whose sides are parallel to the sides (2-5). When coupling two blocks together, the end (14) of each flange (11,12) of each H-section is in contact (at 16,17) with only one upward projection (7') of the adjoining block.
