Rotatable permanent magnet structure for magnetically stirring a molten metal is provided around a mould contg. the metal and is so magnetised to produce a rotating magnetic field in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the mould and produce a shifting magnetic field directed upwardly in a plane parallel to the longitudinal direction. Used for magnetically stirring molten steel for casting into a mould. The magnetic stirring prevents bridging by the rotating movement of the molten metal and reduces central segregation and porosity.
