PURPOSE:A strain in nocardia is cultured in a medium containing norpristane as the major carbon source and the titled substance is collected by separation and used as a synthetic intermediate of vitamin E, K and their homologs. CONSTITUTION:Nocardia BPM1613 (FREM-1609) is cultured in a medium containing norpristane, as the major carbon source, a nitrogen source such as sodium nitrate, ammonia or pepton, inorganic salts and vitamins. Usually the culture medium is kept alkaline and the cultivation is aerobically effected. After cultivation, the culture mixture is made acidic and extracted with a solvent such as ether or benzene. The extract is subjected to silica-gel chromatography, developed with hexane, benzene or acetone alone or a mixed solvent to give 2,6,10-trimethyl-1-pentadecanol of the formula. |
