<p>Processable and thermally stable non-crosslinked anhydride polymers contain glutaric anhydride units of the formula <CHEM> wherein R is H or CH3, having an onset of decomposition temperature of at least 250 DEG C and a Vicat temperature of 50 to 175 DEG C. These polymers can be imidised by reaction with ammonia, preferably in an extruder. The resulting imide polymers are thermally stable and contain imide units free from methyl substitution on the nitrogen atom. The anhydride polymers can be made by devolatilizing polymer containing units of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, preferably in an extruder which may be the same as that used for the imidisation.</p> |
