The invention concerns a brightener (gloss or lustre agent) for rubber goods, in particular for car tyres, and a process for preparing it. The brightener comprises starch and sugar in an aqueous mixture. It is preferably prepared by dissolving sugar in hot water, cooling, and adding starch. The brightener is harmless and environmentally friendly and, on application and drying, produces specular gloss.
