A fluidised bed apparatus comprises a lower cylindrical chamber surmounted by two divergent conical sections one upon the other. Two distributor plates separate the three sections. Fluidising gas and materials to be treated enter the lower cylindrical chamber and the high gas velocity in this part carries over all but the largest particles into the lower of the two conical sections. The diverging cone angle causes a reduction in gas velocity as it passes upwards, resulting in a gradual diminution of particle size towards the top of the bed at which point the discharge is located. Used for fluid bed oxidation and treatment processes esp. in the non-ferrous metallurgical extraction industries.
