The cutter is mounted in a hand-held housing and is rotated by an electric motor. The direction of cutting is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cast. A thin disc with a dia. slightly greater than that of the cutting bit is mounted coaxially with the bit. It slides between the patient's skin and the cast below the tip of the cutter to protect the skin. A small air turbine is also mounted on the housing to blow away any dust formed during the cutting process.
