Process is claimed for the regeneration of spent hydrocarbon conversion catalysts, esp. zeolite FCC catalysts, deactivated by the deposition of nitrogen-contg. coke. The method involves passing the spent catalyst downwards, without substantial backmixing, through a vertical regenerator vessel in countercurrent with upwardly-flowing, O2-contg. regeneration gas. The NOx formed in the lower section of the regenerator are reacted in an O2-free atmosphere in an intermediate section of the regenerator to form elemental N, and the CO formed in the regeneration gas in the intermediate section is burned in the upper section of the vessel, using additional free O2, in the presence of coke-free catalyst. Complete removal of coke is achieved while the emitted flue gas is free of both CO and NOx.
|
