The invention relates to a method of measuring the blood pressure of a person with the aid of a sphygmomanometer having a cuff (1) equipped with a deformable chamber (3) and a microphone (5). After securing the cuff (1) on the arm of the person and inflating the chamber (3) to a sufficient pressure, this pressure is reduced in a non-continuous manner by decompression steps all having one and the same amplitude DELTA p. In a first phase, in which no sound having an intensity greater than a first threshold W0 can be detected with the aid of the microphone (5), the decompression steps are effected at regular intervals, for example every 1.6 seconds. In a second phase, which begins after the detection of two first sounds (S4, S5) whose intensity exceeds the said threshold W0, a decompression step is effected on each appearance of a new sound S0i whose intensity exceeds a threshold Wi associated with the said sound and determined as a function of the intensity of at least one of the previously detected sounds.

|
