Particularly when alloying molten metals in a melting furnace, it is necessary to determine the quantity of molten metal in order from this to determine the required quantities of alloy components using the results of an analysis. In order to be able to work towards precisely predetermined alloy limits more rapidly by more accurate determination of the quantity of molten metal, the geometry of the reception chamber of the vessel is precisely determined before the material to be treated is introduced and the exact level of molten metal relative to a reference point is then determined at the point in time at which the quantity of molten metal is to be determined and, from the level of molten metal and the previously determined geometry of the reception chamber, the exact volume of molten metal is finally calculated.
