A method for the electrical discharge machining of a workpiece in an electrical discharge machining apparatus is described, which electrical discharge machining apparatus is equipped with an in-feed device for the sleeve of a tool electrode and a monitoring device for the current flow over the working gap. In order to make the return of the tool electrode as independent of the in-feed as possible, a predetermined fraction of the in-feed signal is fed to an electrode drive by a drive device controlled by the return signal. Furthermore, an electrical discharge machining apparatus suitable for carrying out the method is described.
