The present invention relates to the treatment of an individual afflicted with cochlear tinnitus comprising administering to the individual an effective amount of a 1-amino-alkylcyclohexane derivative.

A method of treating tinnitus in a subject in need thereof, comprising oral administration of an effective amount of a 1-amino-alkylcyclohexane derivative selected from neramexane and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein treatment occurs within three to twelve months of onset of tinnitus.
