A control circuit for automatically controlling the excitation coefficient of a DC machine having an armature winding and a field winding. The DC machine is operated under conditions in which the load varies from time to time. The control circuit comprises a generator for generating a pulse signal of a predetermined frequency and pulse width, a load signal device for generating an electrical load signal which corresponds to the load of the DC machine, an armature current detecting device which is coupled to the armature winding and generates an electrical driver signal which corresponds to the armature current of the DC machine, a partial control circuit which is coupled to the generator and responds to the load signal and to the driver signal and in this way controls the pulse width of the pulse signal. In addition, the control circuit comprises a device which is connected between the partial control circuit and the armature winding and the field winding, responds to the pulse signal and emits signals to the armature winding and the field winding which vary in accordance with the set pulse width, as a result of which the coefficient of field excitation is varied in accordance with the load and the armature current, and significantly increases the efficiency of the DC machine.
