The parasol is mounted on a fixed support (1) and has at least one radial arm (7) articulated to it. The arm can be moved between a stored position in which it is folded over to lie flat against the support and an operative position in which it is approx. horizontal. The cover of the parasol is supported by ribs (8) which are articulated to a hub (14) and by counter-ribs (20) which are articulated to an independent hub (11). The hub to which the ribs are hinged is mounted solidly on a central mast (15) and the other hub slides along the length of the mast under the action of a control cable. The hinged set of ribs and counter-ribs enable the shape and orientation of the cover to be varied.
