The invention relates to a device which enables a roller skater safely to overcome obstacles in his path. Obstacles are major irregularities and discontinuities on the route, such as staircases, curb stones, gutters and the like. The device consists of a rigid part (8) which is arranged under the frame (6) of the roller skate between the front bridge (2a) and the rear bridge (2b). The lower surface of the rigid part (8) is covered by a sole (10) with a high coefficient of friction. The device can be attached as additional equipment to roller skates which are commercially available. It can however also be manufactured integrally with the frame, especially by casting. In use, the lower surface of the device comes into contact with an edge of the obstacle, e.g. of a stair. The device makes it possible to move up and down stairs in a stable and safe manner. <IMAGE>
