Cleaning firmly adhering surface soiling from a partial surface (4) of a workpiece (3) takes place by exciting a grinding agent suspension, covering the partial surface, to produce ultrasonic oscillations essentially perpendicularly with respect to the partial surface by means of the end face (2), formed as a counter face and arranged a small distance away, of a sonotrode (1). It is advantageous that the grinding agent suspension is conveyed over the treatment surface, for which purpose a hose pump (7) is provided in a pump circuit. The soiling which has been removed can be deposited in a cleaning device (8). <IMAGE>
