7-Acylamino-3halo-3-cephems (IV; X=Cl, Br; R = carboxylic acid protecting group; R1 = H, CH3O; R2(R3)N- = amino-protected group; R2 = acyl derived from H or carboxylic acid; R3 = acyl derived from carboxylic acid), useful as antibiotics, were prepd. by reacting compds. IV with 0.1-1.3 equivs. of triarylphosphate-halogen addn. compd. of formula I (Z = H, halo, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy) in anhydrous inert org. solvent below 30≰C.
