In a process for producing cement clinker by dry-grinding the raw components, mixing the resulting raw meal with a solid fuel, pelletting the resulting portion while adding calcium chloride, subsequently heat-treating the resulting crude mixture pellets in a dense layer in zones with drying, combusting by incinerating a fuel above the surface of the layer while drawing the fuel combustion products through the layer and removing the expelled gases which are released from it, and cooling the resulting clinkers, the temperature of the fuel combustion products above the surface of the dense pellet layer is kept at from 1150 to 1250 degree C within a part of the combustion zone which extends over a length of at most half of the length of the combustion zone, while subsequently lowering this temperature to between 900 and 1000 degree C in the direction of the cooling zone. This achieves low energy consumption and thus good operational economy.
