The tensioning mechanism for a roller blind or screen (1) comprises a tubular winding core (2) rotatable relative to a coaxial shaft (7) and coupled to it via a tensioning coil spring. The shaft ends are rotatably carried in bearings (8,9). The shaft carries a winding drum (5) to take-up a tape (12) as the screen is unrolled (X) and vice versa. - The other end of this tape is secured to two cables (13) which are looped around pulleys (14) and have their other ends secured to screen guide blocks (11) at the ends of a rail (10) along the free edge of the screen. The screen can be operated via a hand crank or a motor drive, with a tooth belt looped around a toothed wheel and having its ends secured to a single looped endless cable (13). FL.(2/3)
