The wheel, which carries a rim and tyre, is marked whilst rotating at a certain position according to an imbalance measurement. The marking arrangement can even be used when the wheel is mounted on the vehicle. It is of very simple design. Very short duration, high energy pulses of energy from a Xenon lamp, laser or infrared source are directed at the wheel so as to mark only the defined position and to cause a detectable surface change. The duration of the pulse is less than 1ms and pref. less than 0.3 ms. The wheel may be fitted with a circle of energy sensitive material to which the pulse is directed, or the pulse may be directed at the rubber tyre surface. The incident energy density exceeds 2Ws/cm(squared).
