In a method and a circuit arrangement for controlling the setting of devices or operating modes at the signal receiving end of a data signal transmission system by outputting control/setting signals from a signal output device (Cs) provided at the signal output end, it is provided that a separate evaluation signal is formed from the respective control/setting signal in the signal receiving device, which evaluation signal exhibits a greater number of bits than the relevant control/setting signal. The evaluation signal is then compared with fixed values provided in the signal receiving device, which are characteristic of the possible settings of devices or operating modes. A data transmission corresponding to the operating mode defined by the control/setting signal or, respectively, to the device set is only made possible when the comparison of the respective evaluation signal with one of the fixed values is positive. <IMAGE>
