A heating element for glass-ceramic cooking surfaces has at least two heating resistors (11,12) and a temperature sensor acting on at least two temperature protection switches (14,15) having different response temperatures. The temperature protection switch (14) having the lowest response temperature is constructed as a changeover switch and is located in the supply line to the associated heating resistor (11) and, on reaching its response temperature, switches the associated heating resistor (11) to be in parallel with the respectively next heating resistor (12). The temperature protection switch (15) having the highest response temperature is located in series with the common return line of all the heating resistors (11,12). <IMAGE>
