The invention is distinguished in that the material to facilitate the said separation is fed into a hammer mill and is coarsely comminuted to release the material of relatively high density from the rest of the material, that the main part of the material fed into the hammer mill is freely discharged in a chiefly horizontal direction at the same height as the upper, downward-going quadrant of the rotor of the hammer mill, and that the material is then subjected to a treatment in order to separate the material of lower density from the material of greater density. The invention also includes an apparatus for practising this process, and this apparatus consists, according to the invention, of a conventional hammer mill with a mainly horizontal outlet (3) at the same height as the upper, downward-going quadrant of the rotor (4) of the hammer mill, in order to ensure an essentially horizontal centrifuging of the main part of the material fed in, such as rootstocks together with contaminants, before the coarse comminution of the material passes over into a fine comminution.
